Good To Know!
By Cate Eales

Appeared January 10, 2008 on castanet.net

I was browsing through my EverNote  notes in search of material for this week's column. I found several items that I had tagged "good to know" and the next thing I knew, I had a column!

Update your Ad-Aware
If you use Ad-Aware SE to scan your computer for spyware, you should upgrade to Ad-Aware 2007. There are no more updates to the SE version. You can get Ad-Aware 2007 here. It will find and uninstall your old SE version.

Resize Vista icons
Have you experienced Vista yet? Most of my clients who have jumped from XP to Vista had the same observation: "Those icons are HUGE!"

As luck would have it, you can make those icons just about any size you want. One way is to double-click on the Computer icon on your desktop. Then click on the down-arrow next to "View". That will open a list with a slider. Move the slider up or down to increase or decrease the size of your icons until you're satisfied.

You can also simply click on an icon you want to resize, hold down the Ctrl key, and scroll your mouse wheel.

Get a free, basic calendar...or get more
There are tons of calendar and reminder programs ) that will play sounds to remind you of something, or keep track of your appointments. And there are lots of us who need things like that. But sometimes, you just need a simple calendar that is quiet and efficient. Xcalday is that calendar. Check it out here.

If you want something more, try LClock, here, or Chameleon Clock, here.

Back up your Outlook Express email
Do you really need all the email you have? Well, you might. But do you really need it all in one place?

Outlook Express Backup 6.5, available here, will let you archive that email from 1996 that you might need one day, move it to a CD or another hard drive, and easily restore it when you actually need it. You can see and restore individual files; you don't have to restore the whole archive. Best of all, the program is free.

Uninstall programs with MyUninstaller
MyUninstaller is an alternative to the Add/Remove programs control in Windows XP. It provides more information than the basic Windows uninstaller, so you rarely have to guess just what it is you're uninstalling. Get it here.
